How Can Innovation in Self-Storage Help the Environment

Innovation in the self-storage industry? The self-storage industry hasn’t changed for over 50 years, PeerStorage is set to change how the self-storage industry negatively impacts the environment in many ways while also giving back to their community. Find out more about how you can join PeerStorage and be the change the self-storage industry needs!

When was the last time you drove by a self-storage facility and thought about its environmental impact, which includes the land used to hold extra possessions, and the energy expended toward operating each facility? Probably never! It’s about time we start thinking of more environmentally friendly and innovative ways of storing extra belongings as our society becomes increasingly aware of the lasting impacts we have on our environment.

What makes the self-storage industry environmentally unfriendly?

According to the 2020 Self Storage Almanac, there is roughly 1.8 billion sq. ft. of storage space in the United States, with over 52,000 self-storage facilities. There are more storage facilities than McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Starbucks, Pizza Hut, and Dunkin’ Donuts combined. According to the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, it takes roughly 640,000 gallons of gasoline to construct a 50,000 sq. ft. commercial building. Imagine how much gasoline it takes for 52,000 facilities to operate with an average building size of 34,600 sq. ft. Not only do storage facilities take a large amount of energy to build, but they also require huge lots of land, that should be used for housing or parks. Additionally, habitats and trees are destroyed to build these new facilities. If we are ever going to defeat climate change, we are going to have to start considering where and how we store our extra possessions.

What is PeerStorage?

PeerStorage is a peer-to-peer self-storage marketplace, where people with unused space on their property can list and rent to others in need of storage. Basically, the Airbnb of self-storage.

But that’s not all…

There are zero emissions expensed for utilizing unused space, as they do not require any additional electricity to operate where people already live. PeerStorage is set to change the storage industry’s negative impact on the environment by becoming the first carbon-negative storage solution by partnering with the National Forest Foundation. We are providing an opportunity for people to store their belongings in spaces that are already built, which in turn uses little to no energy, especially in comparison to the items stored in self-storage facilities. PeerStorage is a service that provides communities the opportunity to make extra cash to pay their bills and support their families during the hard times brought forth by COVID and this pandemic. Our marketplace is full of opportunities for people to rent their unused spaces and for people to rent low-cost, convenient storage. Therefore, PeerStorage will continuously remain focused on our goal to become the first carbon-negative storage service, while working to reverse the negative impacts the current self-storage industry has on the environment.

Our Commitment

First and foremost, we are committed to serving our customers and providing the most convenient, trusted, secured, and low-cost storage solution for all of our community members. Additionally, we are committed to providing property owners with the hassle-free opportunity of make extra cash by renting space that they already own and never utilize. Our renters and storage hosts are our top priority, and we take their possessions and rented space seriously.

Without our renters and storage hosts, we wouldn’t be able to accomplish our commitment to protecting the environment as we partner with the National Forest Foundation. We have pledged to plant two (2) trees for every new listing or booking made through the PeerStorage service. Two (2) trees mitigate over 1-ton of CO2 over its lifetime. We hope to begin reversing carbon emissions due to self-storage development, facility operations, and the destruction of land for storage facilities by donating to efforts that fight against climate change. We have started the “List a Space, Plant a Tree” initiative to encourage communities to list their space, not only to make money but to help the planet by limiting further self-storage development.

Time For Action!

PeerStorage is on a mission to change the self-storage industry by providing customers the opportunity to generate income from their unused space and by providing a convenient, low-cost storage option for renters while helping the environment at the same time. Only YOU can help PeerStorage reach our goal of becoming the only carbon-negative storage service. Please go to our website register for the PeerStorage service, list your space, and find out more about how you can help our cause!
